About The Collection

Our collection of variation clips documents the standard way of performing these variations, in Israel and abroad, and is meant to allow people from different places dance in coordination in Ruedas, and remember elements they learned.

As we got help from people abroad - Denmark, Venezuela, USA, Argentina, Peru and more, we hope our clips will help people from all around the world get aquinted with new elements of the Cuban/Miami style.

The Media Noche Collection contains demonstrations, with no explanations.

It is meant to assist students who want to recall what they have learned, or instructors who look for some new moves. It definitely isn't a replacement for an instructor! No collection can give the personal comments, insights and emphasis that an instructor gives.

Using the collection is under the user's responsibility, and at your own risk.

Adding a club to the "club pages" list

Whether you are a club owner, or a simple dancer, We will be happy to add your club levels/variations page to the list, with all relevant links to the Media Noche collection clips.

The first requirement is that we will have the page creator's permission for this (usually the club/academy owner). Once this permission will be sent to vars.collection@media-noche.org, we can start working on it!

There are two possible types of club pages:

  1. Pages made by the collection team: The collection team can create a copy of your club's page for you, add links to it, and maintain it here, at media-noche.org. We will make sure to add links to this page when we upload new clips or replace clips, so it will remain up to date.

This option is good for all clubs, whether they have their own website or not, and even if have their own variations collection (it's free publicity).

  2. External pages: Clubs with actively maintained sites of their own, sometimes already have a levels/variations page in their site, with their own design, and they just want to add links to the media noche collection.

In this case, once they finish the linking, we create a link in the list to the relevant page on their site.

We will also be happy to provide them with a comfortable list of the links they need for their page (so nothing will be missed). Yet, it's their responsibility to check for new or replaced clips, since we have no way of processing and analyzing their page.

Comments:

  • We don't mess with inter-club politics. Any club who will want to have his linked page in the list, will get our help.

  • The pages can contain extra information on the club, if desired.

  • The collection is not commercial, and all activity is done by vulenteers. So no payment is involved, or will be involved.

Feel free to contact us at vars.collection@media-noche.org with any further question or request.

Note on variation names

different Salsa clubs sometimes have different versions of variations. The club pages links to the clip which shows the closest version taought in the page's club. This means that sometimes a certain variation name in the page will link to a clip with a totally different name. This is OK, since the name in the clip is a unique name used in the collection (to avoid confusion), while the name in the page is the name which the page user probably knows and prefers.

For example: Clubs from Venezuela will usually have "Setenta Y Cinco" linked to the collection's "Setenta Complicado" clip, since it is identical to their local version of "Setenta Y Cinco". The variation "Setenta Complicado" in their page will be linked to the collection's "Setenta Complicado Latina".

Second example: Club pages from israel will usually have "Setenta" linking to the collection's "Setenta (Israeli)", while most other clubs will have it linked to the collection's "Setenta (Miami)".

Third example: the names "Enchufla", "Enchufle", "Enchufe", "Deshecho" in club pages will usually all link to the collection's "Enchufala" clip, since these are all different names for the same variation

Maybe, as time will go by, different clubs will start using the standard collection's names, or maybe they'll just be aware that they are called differently in other places. Both are good options.

Which variations will not appear in the collection?

For a variation to be valid for the collection it should align with at least one of the following conditions:

  1. It is not a combination - meaning it has contains least one element which doesn't appear in other variations. There are countless combinations, and new ones are invented and forgotten all the time, documenting them is meaningless

  2. It is well known - it is known in several clubs, or well based in a certain club, for a considerable period of time. meaning it is not expacted to disappear.

  3. It appears in a collection of variations known to a considerable group of dancers - meaning that even if forgotten, it is well documented and has the option to become relevant again.

  4. It appears in a club page - if it is taught by any club which has a club page in the Media Noche collection club pages list, it should be in the collection.

Any variation that doesn't answer to any of these conditions will not appear in the Media Noche colection.

What if a certain club is teaching a different version of a certain variation? would it be filmed for the collection?

We ran into several cases in which a club has a local version of a certain variation, differet by only minor elements.
For example: Setenta has at least four different versions.
On the one hand we try to be a helpful tool for the dancers, reminding them what they have learned.
On the other hand we don't want countless versions of the same variation in the collection, with negligible differences.

So there are several possible solutions for a local version, which we choose after advising the relevant club's team:

  1. If the club see the version differences as negligible, or the club simply want their dancers to be coordinated with the rest of the salsa scene, we'll link the variation name to the main version in the collection, commenting in the variation page comments on the possible version differences.
  2. If the club wants their local versions documented:
    1. If the version already has a clip under a different name, we will link to that clip. By using the page the dancers will know it's a local version. By using the clip they'll have a globaly unique name for it.

    2. If the version has no clip, it will be filmed under the name scheme "variation clubname" such as "Kentucky Complicado Latinobeat" or "Setenta Latingate".

If the local version is not significantly different from a standard variation, it is advised for the club to define the differences as style issue, and let the students know how the standard version goes in addition to the local one.
The standard versions were set upon discussions by people from all large salsa centers in israel, from different periods, and by advising popular textual and non-textual resources for instructors. So They are surely cannot be considered local versions of one club or another.

Anyway, we will be happy to work with any club who wants his local versions documented.
And we'll be happy to be acknowledged about local versions, from all collection users, by comments such as "That's not how they do it in my club".
